The Birth of a Nation
Special Advance Screening w/ Co-Producer Ben Renzo
Friday, Sept. 30

Fleur Cinema

Des Moines Film Society is proud to host a special, advance screening of THE BIRTH OF A NATION, winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A discussion with Co-Producer Ben Renzo will follow the screening.

Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself, his wife Cherry (Aja Naomi King), and fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

“Parker generously calls to all with his rallying cry of a film, a weighty invocation of past bravery that charges its audience with the essential, nation-defining mission of fighting for a better and more just future.”
— Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

This is a private, FREE screening, open only to Des Moines Film Society members and other invited guests.
